The U.S. Congress mandated the creation of Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs) and the governing rules. The Purple Button is a way to make it safe, fast, user friendly and simple http://kbco.re/the-purple-button/ for hospital employees to fill out the AHRQ Common Formats Forms as part of a PSOs Patient Safety Evaluation System. The Purple Button App will connect agnostically with any EMR, extract the required PHI from the CCD or C-CDA documents they produce as a requirement for Meaningful Use (MU) and auto-populate the Common Formats forms at the click of a button. The App displays the 9 categories required in the Common Formats. When a clinician clicks on one it opens up a page to scan a patients barcoded wrist band and auto-populate the patients information on the form. The same goes for medications, medical devices and blood and blood products. Clinicians can write a short description about the event, voice record a description and take a picture or a video of the condition to accompany the descriptions, store and send them encrypted to a predefined destination in the cloud. Clinicians have the choice of submitting a full report, an anonymous report, or report to their own group only and not to the hospital. All this takes place in 60 -90 seconds. Patient lives will be saved and the costs of medical errors reduced when this communication is made in real-time at the bedside with decision makers in quality risk and patient safety. The other important attribute is that this process integrates with the clinicians workflow and allows the use of either the smart phone in their pocket if there is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy in place, or the use of a health system secure device such as the Motorola MC40 HC or the MioCARE A-105 tablet designed for healthcare.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
